So You Want to Learn About Basketball.

Or was this what you just heard from your son or daughter,”Hey mom, hey dad, Taylor (your child’s best friend) is going out for basketball at school (rec. center, YMCA, etc.) can I go out for basketball too?” Welcome to youth basketball.

Perhaps it was, “Mr. Johnson, Mrs. Johnson, since Billy or Sally is playing basketball how about coaching their team?  We need people to coach to run the teams?” Welcome to the world of coaching basketball.

So where do you start?  And what do you need to know?

If you really want to learn the game of basketball, then do yourself a favor.

Start from the basics of basketball and build from there.

  1. Learn about the basketball game; how, where, why, what and who?
  2. If you’re coaching, then start with basketball drills that will teach your players the necessary skills to play on the court.
  3. As they gain experience in skills, introduce them to some basketball plays they can use in the game.
  4. Research and read on line and off line about playing basketball.
  5. Go to school. Many organizations like the local y, boys & girls club, local recreation center all offer clinics and workshops on all aspects of basketball.

Whatever you choose to pursue, learn the game of basketball and keep learning.  Lace up your sneakers and play the game with your kids or your buddies after work.  Take your kids to some college basketball games and watch the players and the coaches.  You can get lots of great drills ideas from getting there early to see the teams warm up.

Basketball is a great sport.  If you can remember to learn the game, play the game, and have a lot of fun doing it, you will always love the game of basketball. Who knows, maybe it will be your son or daughter who ends up being a fantasy basketball pick someday.
