                                                  Ask The Coach

This is a tip sheet for the newbie or experienced basketball coach for kids.

Each month we will cover some tips on helping you get the best results from your team.

When the leaves start to fall in the eastern states, we know that basketball isn’t far behind.  This month of November brings the new team together and for you another great season on the court.  As a coach you know it involves a lot of planning to use the few practice times you will have with your players before the first game… which is right around the corner.  Below are some starting tips to make the most out of your time with them.

Getting your team ready to play their first game

Tip #1 – Set the Boundaries

Whether you have had these players before or it is a brand new group of kids, they and their parents need to know what your

plans are for them for the season.  Set up a quick meeting with them to discuss:

a)      Any attendance rules and consequences for missed practices.

b)      How you will play the players in the game.  Will everyone play or are you just putting your best players on the court.

c)      What you hope to teach the players by the end of the season.

d)     Hand out a schedule with practice and game times.

e)      Set up how they will be contacted. And how they can contact you.

f)       Ask them for their input on what they want for their kids.

Tip #2 – Teach Ball Handling Skills

Show them from basics of dribbling with their fingertips to forms of passing and shooting.  Have the players download the Free Courtside Basics 101  interactive program and work through it.  It will save you a lot of time in explaining the rules over and over again to them.  They can get a lot of it at home in between times they are coming to practice.

Tip # 3 – Teach Basic Offense and Defense

Courtside Basics 101 goes over the positions of the offensive team. After they read about it, you can go over it with them to clarify.

A  Defense section is also there with man to man or zone.

.

Tip #4 – Run the Drills

Leg wraps, drops, lay ups, weave, passing, foul shots, etc.   We will run more drills in next month’s column.

Also a good source for drills is in the following links:

Tip #5 - Walk them thru the Game

Starting with the jump ball, show your players what they can expect as the game unfolds.

Go over bringing the ball in, lining up for foul shots, what to do on time outs, warm ups before the game, etc.

Most importantly teach your players about good sportsmanship and having the positive and respectful attitude on and off the court.
